The 99% of Running: Training, Gear, and Learning What Works

We have all heard it before—the race itself is only 1% of the work, while the other 99% happens during training. Living in a colder part of California, training outside has been an adventure of its own. We regularly find ourselves running in 30-degree weather, and there are days when we’re training in rain or snow. Learning what to wear to stay warm, dry, and comfortable without overheating has been a process of trial and error.

Shoes: Finding What Works for Your Feet

For shoes, we primarily use Brooks. Personally, I am a huge fan of the Brooks Adrenaline and Ghost Max 3. I rotate between my RunDisney-themed pairs and my regular training shoes. For my foot type, these have been the most comfortable and supportive options. One thing I learned along the way—sometimes foot pain isn’t the shoe itself, but the laces being too tight. Loosening them slightly made a huge difference for me.

Running Bottoms: Still Searching for “The One”

I am still on the hunt for the perfect running capri. If you have recommendations, please send them my way! I’ve tried options from Target, a local running store in Reno, and Amazon. They’ve all been fine, but I’m still looking for something that’s functional, flattering, and fun. Sadly, my Comfrt sweats turned out to be too warm for running, even in cold weather.

For rain, my RunDisney Brooks jacket has been a lifesaver. It keeps me dry without making me feel like I’m running in a sauna.

Sports Bras: A Non-Negotiable Essential

Alright ladies—let’s talk about bras. As someone who is well-endowed, finding a supportive running bra was a huge source of anxiety for me. After seeing endless options online, I finally gave Shefit a try. I can honestly say these bras have been absolutely amazing. They’re comfortable, adjustable, and provide incredible support—even through an entire half-marathon. No movement, no discomfort. This is a 5-star recommendation from me.

Socks Matter More Than You Think

Socks are another must-have piece of gear. I love Feetures socks—they’re comfortable, reduce chafing, and help prevent blisters. I also love that they’re designed for each specific foot. My husband prefers toe socks, and he swears they’ve dramatically reduced blisters, especially during long runs.

Our Favorite Running Gear

We’ve added many of our favorite running products to our Amazon store, and we’re always updating it as we test new gear. Feel free to check it out, and don’t hesitate to message us with questions. We love hearing about your experiences with products—and we’re always open to trying new recommendations.

Training may be the hardest part of running, but having the right gear makes it so much more enjoyable.

Your journey begins the moment you decide you’re worth the effort.

We’ve got this—together.

See you at the next run. 🏃‍♀️✨🏅
