Holy Crap... When Did We Turn 50? A Beginner's Guide to Getting Your Groove Back

There comes a moment in every Gen Xer's life when you wake up, look in the mirror, and think...
"Wait... when did THIS happen?"
Seriously.
Yesterday I was blasting Bon Jovi in my car, eating Pizza Hut Personal Pan Pizzas after school, and trying to figure out how to record songs off the radio without the DJ talking over the intro.

Today?
I'm researching compression socks, comparing running shoes like they're luxury handbags, and getting excited over a Costco-sized bottle of ibuprofen.
Life comes at you fast.
Then one day your kids are grown, your calendar isn't packed with football practice, dance recitals, band concerts, or PTA meetings, and you suddenly look at your spouse and ask...
"Well... now what?"
For my husband and me, the answer was simple.
Let's start running.
Now before you laugh...
We laughed too.

Midlife Crisis? Nope... Midlife Adventure!
Three years ago, if someone had told me I'd voluntarily sign up to run 13.1 miles—and actually PAY for the privilege—I would have questioned their sanity.
Now?
We plan vacations around races.
We chase medals.
We schedule trail runs on weekends.
We get excited about new Brooks shoes.
Who are these people??
The best part?
Our kids still come with us sometimes.
Every now and then they even bring along an unsuspecting friend.
Bless their hearts.
Those poor kids have no idea they're about to spend an entire weekend listening to us talk about pace, snacks, hydration, and why one trail was uphill BOTH WAYS.
At least they'll leave with good stories.
"Where Do I Even Start?"
This is probably the number one question we get.
"I want to start... but I have no idea what to do."
First...
Get cleared by your healthcare provider.
Especially if you've had previous injuries, surgeries, chronic pain, or medical conditions.
It's amazing what you discover once you start moving again.
You'll probably realize one side of your body has been carrying the other for the past decade.
That's normal.
Your body has been compensating for years.
Now you're simply teaching it how to work together again.

Small... Seriously
You do NOT have to run a marathon next month.
Heck...
You don't even have to run.
Walk.
Bike.
Swim.
Hike.
Dance around your kitchen while pretending you're in an '80s music video.
Just move.
Choose something that actually sounds fun.
Because if you hate it...
You're not going to stick with it.
Aim for about 50-60 minutes, two or three days each week.
The first few weeks?
Every muscle in your body is going to file a formal complaint.
You'll discover muscles you didn't even know existed.
Stairs will suddenly become your greatest enemy.
Getting off the toilet might require a strategy meeting.
This is completely normal.
Go buy the Epsom salts.
Take the hot bath.
Jump in the spa.
Try a cold plunge if you're one of those brave people.
Recovery is part of training.
Ladies... Let's Talk About Strength Training
Can we please stop thinking strength training means becoming a bodybuilder?
I don't want to deadlift a pickup truck.
I just want to carry the 40-pound bag of dog food without sounding like I'm giving birth.
Strength training is what helps us stay independent.
It protects our bones.
Improves balance.
Reduces aches and pains.
Helps prevent osteoporosis.
Makes hiking easier.
Makes getting off the floor easier.
Makes carrying groceries easier.
Makes life easier.
That's the goal.
Not looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger.
If you're on Medicare, definitely look into SilverSneakers.
There are fantastic fitness benefits included with many Medicare plans, and a lot of people don't even realize they're eligible.
If you're not on Medicare, check your insurance benefits.
Many plans now include discounted or even free gym memberships.
And if insurance websites make your head hurt...
I get it.
Feel free to reach out.
I'm always happy to help point people in the right direction.

Find Your People
One thing I've learned during this journey...
Who you surround yourself with matters.
Find the people who celebrate your wins.
Find the people who will remind you to keep going.
Find the people who won't let you quit on yourself.
My husband has become all three.
Some days he's my biggest cheerleader.
Other days he's the reason I actually put my shoes on.
Because apparently "I'm too tired" isn't a valid excuse in our house anymore.
Rude.
But effective.
The Biggest Surprise
I thought getting healthier meant losing weight.
Turns out...
It meant finding myself again.
I have more energy.
Less pain.
Better sleep.
More confidence.
I'm stronger than I've been in years.
And the funny thing is...
None of that happened overnight.
It happened one walk.
One workout.
One choice.
One day at a time.
It's Never Too Late
Whether you're 40...
50...
60...
Or beyond...
It is never too late to become stronger than you were yesterday.
Your future self is counting on the choices you make today.
Start small.
Stay consistent.
Laugh when things don't go according to plan.
Celebrate every victory.
And remember...
You don't have to become the fastest runner.
You just have to keep moving.
Because the goal isn't simply living longer.
The goal is living better.
And who knows...
Maybe next year you'll be standing at the starting line with us, wondering why in the world you paid money to run.
Trust me...
The medal makes it worth it.
Your journey begins the moment you decide you're worth the effort.
We've got this—together.
See you at the next run. 🏃♀️✨🏅
