Sometimes one lake just isnât enough. That was the case for us the other dayâwe started at Crater Lake (aka my âBaby Craterâ), but quickly found ourselves lake-hopping to Walker Lake when my son got the fishing bug.
đŁ Crater Lake â Where Are the Fish?
My son had his fishing pole ready, but rumor had it Crater Lake might not actually have fish. Later, some locals told me that fish do exist thereâbut theyâre way down deep. Either way, my son wasnât convinced, so we packed up and decided to try another spot.
đ Walker Lake â A Pleasant Surprise
About 30 minutes west of Crater, just outside the town of Westwood, sits Walker Lake. At first glance, it looks small and unassuming, but donât let it fool youâthis lake is full of charm.
Hiking:Â Trails wrap around the lake and are mostly flat, perfect for an easy stroll.
Fishing: Even midday, the lake was buzzing with anglers. One man, using what I jokingly called a âkidâs pole,â pulled two baby catfish out of the creek. My son was inspired and quickly joined in.
Wildlife:Â Ducks, cattails taller than me (6+ feet!), and even a mama duck with her babies floating peacefully across the water.
My favorite part? The scent of wild mint. Every step released a fresh burst of fragranceâit was like natureâs own essential oil diffuser.

đ Fishing Fails and Family Fun
While walking across the narrow dam path, my son cast his line and promptly got it stuck. Watching him try to untangle it had me laughing so hardâclassic memory-making moment!
